Lorna Helps Break Down the Language Barrier |
An entrepreneur from Handsworth Wood has turned her part-time job into a full-time profession by setting up a language tutoring business with a difference.Lorna Allen, from Inchcape Avenue, used to work for The Brambles Children's Centre in Kingstanding, but now helps foreign students to learn English. The 40-year-old mother of two links up visitors from all over the world with hosts who offer formal lessons and the opportunity for guests to immerse themselves in English culture. Hosts provide lessons, board and lodging but the students also get the unique chance to get involved with their lifestyle. "I really enjoy it. I pick students up from the airport and take them to their host family," said Lorna "Two weeks later, on the return journey, they are a different person. There is a massive difference with their English." Now Lorna is on the lookout for more hosts. There are three basic requirements for people wanting to teach English to foreigners - a qualification such as Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) or a degree, a spare room and a love of people from different cultures.
